ART AND CRAFT: 3D GARDEN

I am one who doesn't like to spend on toys. I would rather my children make their own because sooner or later, they won't want to play with children's toys anymore.

Before my son started formal school, we spent two sessions daily on different activities. Most of our activities involved art and craft.

This week, I would love to share with you a 3D garden that we made four years ago.

Week 13: ART and CRAFT

TOPIC: 3D Garden

Materials:

  • Boxes of different sizes for the garden and flower pots.
  • Colour papers for grass, sky, and a pond.
  • Old books or magazines to cut out pictures like flowers, fish and tree. Or you can print out whatever you need.
  • Cotton for clouds.
  • Glue and scissors.
Here we go!

Get the biggest box, which you want to use for the scene and cut out the left and right sides of the top part.

Paste blue colour paper at the top and back (inside) of the box for the sky.

Paste green colour paper at the bottom (inside of the box) for the lawn.

Crumple some blue paper and stick them on the lawn for a fish pond. (refer to Picture D)

Picture A

Get some green colour papers and cut them (refer to the picture below) for grass. Leave about 1cm uncut so you can stick it on the lawn.

Picture B

Take smaller boxes for flower pots. You can decorate the boxes with stickers. Here, we use labelling stickers.

Picture C

Cut out pictures that you want to add into the scenery. Here, we have some fishes in the pond, flowers, a tree, and a girl watering the flowers.

Lastly, use the cotton to make clouds and stick them at the top part of the box.

Now, the children can have a garden tea party with their toy dolls, animals or robots!

Enjoy the tea party! 😎

Stress Free Mode

Now, as I typed on my laptop, my 5 year-old daughter sits in front of me, doing her own work. She is doing something on her own. Something that no one tells her to do. It is 100% at her own will. She is copying from a storybook. It is a Malay storybook she borrowed from school. And she is trying to read as she copies.  She is smiling as she tries to read the words and although she still struggles with many of the words, she is smiling while she tries. Once in a while, she would ask me how to pronounce a certain syllable.  And now, she is singing out the words she copies.  _________________________________________________ This scene, right in front of me, is the result of an important lesson I learnt a year ago.  I learnt that, for effective learning to take place, the learner should be in a "stress free mode".  And for them to be in that mode, it most probably has to be something they find interesting or rather, something they w...

What a Treat! What a Cheat!

When it comes to food , how often do you cheat ? Do you plan to follow a certain diet but end up having more cheat days than you intend to? or Do you intend to eat home cooked food for the entire week but end up eating out almost everyday? You are not alone!!👊 We are partners in crime! Look at the picture below. It's a plate of lunch for my children. Prawn paste fried chicken, stir fry mustard leaves and white rice. Served on a plate from our kitchen. The only thing I cook is the rice. 😜 I bought the chicken and vegetables from an economy rice shop.  They are my children's top picks. It is a shop that sells a wide variety of dishes (about 50-60), mostly Chinese. The food are pre cooked and displayed on large serving trays. It is self service and faster than the fast food restaurant. When my children saw the food served to them, they had a debate on whether it was takeaway or home cooked . 😃 My 8 year old boy said: Mummy bought from Bar Wang Fan (the na...

Traveling with Kids: Tioman Island

Traveling with children can be quite challenging. They need activities to keep them busy. From my experiences with my children, they don't really like to eat or shop. They want fun play and they want to explore. So, once in a while, we take them out for little adventures. Last June, we decided to take them to an island. WEEK 12: FUN PLAY TOPIC: A TRIP TO AN ISLAND It was a 3 nights 4 days trip. We stayed at Berjaya Tioman Resorts DAY 1 Lunch: I love burgers so it was a pretty good start for me.  Despite a pretty good lunch, our journey was delayed by about an hour. There were only two ferry trips to the island from Mersing, Johor. We chose the 3pm one instead of the 7am one because we didn't want to wake up at dawn and drive all the way to Mersing. When we reached the island, it was already dinner time. With kids along, we just had a short walk around the resort and went to bed early. DAY 2 We decided to go island hopping and snorkelli...
