I have two answers to the question on why I made my children go through the "trouble" of making their own flashcards. They made their own alphabet and number charts too.
Answer 1:
Children learn faster and better if they "do it themselves". Adults too, right? First hand experience is the best teacher, isn't it?
"I see and I forget. I hear and I remember. I do and I understand." Remember this?
Answer 2:
It makes learning more interesting if they use materials they made on their own. Just like if they cooked it on their own, they will most likely eat it too! Similar concept.
So, yes. We made our own number flashcards.
WEEK 10: MATHEMATICS
TOPIC: NUMBERS AND SEQUENCING
Materials needed:
- Old mathematic books with attractive printed numbers OR you can also print your own numbers.
- You'll need the words for the numbers too. You can use any language you prefer.
- A4 size cards cut into eight smaller cards
- Labeling stickers of any shape and size but not too big because you'll need to put put to 10 stickers in one card.
- Scissors and glue
- A string
- Chairs to tie the strings to
Let's get started.
1. Get the child/student to cut out the numbers and the words. In this case, 1 to 10.
2. Give the child/student the cards to stick the numbers on them, one on each card.
3. Next, the child/student will have to stick the number of stickers at the other side of the card.
4. When completed, hang the cards in ascending order, on a string.
5. Go through the numbers with the child and then you can do number sequencing activities such as:
- rearrange the numbers in ascending or descending order
- fill in the blanks (the peg without a card is the "blank" to fill)
6. For more advanced level, you can also do "more than" and "less than" activity with them using the cards. Just add one more card with the " >" and " < " symbol.
