Express Food

In my house, raw food is express food.

Followed by parboiling and steamed.

This week, we shall look at some express food we serve at home.

THIS WEEK's SPECIAL: Veggies

DISH A

Japanese lettuce, carrots, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes served raw. You can also add dressings of your choice such as olive oil, grapes oil, Udo's oil or salad sauces.

A friend of mine called it "rabbit food'. I taught it was a very appropriate name for the dish too because my daughter loves it and she has always wanted "to be a rabbit". Sometimes, she would ask me to call her "rabbit" instead of by her name. 😓😓

DISH B

Parboiled broccoli, baby corns and carrots.

I don't serve raw baby corns and broccoli at home so I would parboil them. I noticed that after parboiling the veggies, the colours are enhanced and they look better. If I have more time, I would stir fry these vegetables with mushrooms and black fungus.

DISH C

Steamed corn kernels (fresh ones) and diced carrots. Topped with cheese and some herbs of your choice.

DISH D

Pickled pineapple, carrots, cucumber and onions. You can add some fresh chillies too!

Soak them in vinegar and sugar for at least 8 hours.

An excellent side dish for meat and seafood or use it as an appetiser.

Since vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals, add them to your daily diet. They are easy to prepare and healthier than fruits that are high in sugar.

Let's kickstart a healthy diet today!😃

Stress Free Mode

Now, as I typed on my laptop, my 5 year-old daughter sits in front of me, doing her own work. She is doing something on her own. Something that no one tells her to do. It is 100% at her own will. She is copying from a storybook. It is a Malay storybook she borrowed from school. And she is trying to read as she copies.  She is smiling as she tries to read the words and although she still struggles with many of the words, she is smiling while she tries. Once in a while, she would ask me how to pronounce a certain syllable.  And now, she is singing out the words she copies.  _________________________________________________ This scene, right in front of me, is the result of an important lesson I learnt a year ago.  I learnt that, for effective learning to take place, the learner should be in a "stress free mode".  And for them to be in that mode, it most probably has to be something they find interesting or rather, something they w...

What a Treat! What a Cheat!

When it comes to food , how often do you cheat ? Do you plan to follow a certain diet but end up having more cheat days than you intend to? or Do you intend to eat home cooked food for the entire week but end up eating out almost everyday? You are not alone!!👊 We are partners in crime! Look at the picture below. It's a plate of lunch for my children. Prawn paste fried chicken, stir fry mustard leaves and white rice. Served on a plate from our kitchen. The only thing I cook is the rice. 😜 I bought the chicken and vegetables from an economy rice shop.  They are my children's top picks. It is a shop that sells a wide variety of dishes (about 50-60), mostly Chinese. The food are pre cooked and displayed on large serving trays. It is self service and faster than the fast food restaurant. When my children saw the food served to them, they had a debate on whether it was takeaway or home cooked . 😃 My 8 year old boy said: Mummy bought from Bar Wang Fan (the na...

Traveling with Kids: Tioman Island

Traveling with children can be quite challenging. They need activities to keep them busy. From my experiences with my children, they don't really like to eat or shop. They want fun play and they want to explore. So, once in a while, we take them out for little adventures. Last June, we decided to take them to an island. WEEK 12: FUN PLAY TOPIC: A TRIP TO AN ISLAND It was a 3 nights 4 days trip. We stayed at Berjaya Tioman Resorts DAY 1 Lunch: I love burgers so it was a pretty good start for me.  Despite a pretty good lunch, our journey was delayed by about an hour. There were only two ferry trips to the island from Mersing, Johor. We chose the 3pm one instead of the 7am one because we didn't want to wake up at dawn and drive all the way to Mersing. When we reached the island, it was already dinner time. With kids along, we just had a short walk around the resort and went to bed early. DAY 2 We decided to go island hopping and snorkelli...
