Mathematics: Number Recognition for Beginners

It's the time of the month for a new activity for mathematics so you can keep your child busy counting!

This is another activity to strengthen the child's number recognition skill.

WEEK 6: MATHEMATICS

TOPIC: NUMBERS

Note: This activity helps a child to understand the meaning of numbers by counting the circless and also to recognise the digits.

PROJECT: NUMBER RECOGNITION ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

Note: One number for each page of worksheet

1. Prepare A4 papers (white), labelling stickers of the same shape and colour, marker pen, print out numbers (please refer to picture B) and print out the numbers in words or in any language(s) you want to use.

2. Draw a box at the bottom half of the paper (as seen in Picture A).

3. Take a sheet of labelling stickers and write two different numbers on the stickers. Please refer to the stickers in Picture A. Here, you can see that I have the numbers "5" and "6".

4. Since my daughter was doing number "5" here (based on the pictures), you can see that I have put 5 stickers at the top right of the worksheet.

Now, we are done with the preparation.

5. Start the activity by getting the child/student to count the number of stickers on the worksheet. (Picture A)

6. Then give her two numbers to choose from. This is to see if she could recognise the number she is looking for. (Picture B)

7. Next, the child/student would stick the number at the top left of the worksheet, followed by the word. Here, we have the English language "five" and Chinese character "δΊ”". (Refer to picture C)

8. Lastly, the child/student would choose the correct numbers from the stickers sheet and put them in the box. (Refer to picture D)

If you tried out this activity with your child/student, please let us know the results.

Or

If you have other methods to teach numbers recognition, please share with us in the comments.

Stress Free Mode

Now, as I typed on my laptop, my 5 year-old daughter sits in front of me, doing her own work. She is doing something on her own. Something that no one tells her to do. It is 100% at her own will. She is copying from a storybook. It is a Malay storybook she borrowed from school. And she is trying to read as she copies.  She is smiling as she tries to read the words and although she still struggles with many of the words, she is smiling while she tries. Once in a while, she would ask me how to pronounce a certain syllable.  And now, she is singing out the words she copies.  _________________________________________________ This scene, right in front of me, is the result of an important lesson I learnt a year ago.  I learnt that, for effective learning to take place, the learner should be in a "stress free mode".  And for them to be in that mode, it most probably has to be something they find interesting or rather, something they w...

What a Treat! What a Cheat!

When it comes to food , how often do you cheat ? Do you plan to follow a certain diet but end up having more cheat days than you intend to? or Do you intend to eat home cooked food for the entire week but end up eating out almost everyday? You are not alone!!πŸ‘Š We are partners in crime! Look at the picture below. It's a plate of lunch for my children. Prawn paste fried chicken, stir fry mustard leaves and white rice. Served on a plate from our kitchen. The only thing I cook is the rice. 😜 I bought the chicken and vegetables from an economy rice shop.  They are my children's top picks. It is a shop that sells a wide variety of dishes (about 50-60), mostly Chinese. The food are pre cooked and displayed on large serving trays. It is self service and faster than the fast food restaurant. When my children saw the food served to them, they had a debate on whether it was takeaway or home cooked . πŸ˜ƒ My 8 year old boy said: Mummy bought from Bar Wang Fan (the na...

Traveling with Kids: Tioman Island

Traveling with children can be quite challenging. They need activities to keep them busy. From my experiences with my children, they don't really like to eat or shop. They want fun play and they want to explore. So, once in a while, we take them out for little adventures. Last June, we decided to take them to an island. WEEK 12: FUN PLAY TOPIC: A TRIP TO AN ISLAND It was a 3 nights 4 days trip. We stayed at Berjaya Tioman Resorts DAY 1 Lunch: I love burgers so it was a pretty good start for me.  Despite a pretty good lunch, our journey was delayed by about an hour. There were only two ferry trips to the island from Mersing, Johor. We chose the 3pm one instead of the 7am one because we didn't want to wake up at dawn and drive all the way to Mersing. When we reached the island, it was already dinner time. With kids along, we just had a short walk around the resort and went to bed early. DAY 2 We decided to go island hopping and snorkelli...
